Hands of Light in Action volunteers, Lorin and Mathieu, sending Camp Hope resident, Belene, to school. Proud of all you continue to do!

“Belene Georges is a 21 year-old woman Mathieu and I met when we were in Haiti. She had a compartment injury in her right arm from the earthquake of Jan 12, 2010. Mathieu saw Belene in physiotherapy. I got to know her through visiting the physiotherapy tent and we started to talk on our own. We met Belene’s mother, her niece Timmyka, and her brother Reginald. Sadly, 5 members of her family had been killed during the earthquake, including her older sister who had supported her for school. The more we got to know Belene and her family, the more we liked them. Belene has an amazing work ethic and is incredibly kind. Unfortunately, her chances for finishing school were nil at that point due to a lack of funding. In Haiti, there are substantial fees for high school and university. Mathieu and I spoke with Belene and we decided to assist her by paying for her last year of high school, including transportation fees. We are also thinking about continued support if Belene decides to go to university. Thus, the reason for the group! Mathieu and I will be running the Edinburgh marathon on May 22. We would like to raise money for Belene’s schooling, which would go towards this year and, if she decides to continue, we will start saving for university. If you would like to give, that would be phenomenal. Whatever amount you would like to give,it would be great. Please contact us at runningforbelene@yahoo.co.uk if you are interested. Thank you!!!”
