Dear family & friends,
Weekends are such a nice change of pace here in Fond Parisien. After a week filled with physical therapy treatments, hospital transportation coordination, patient follow-ups and planning for transition of patient care after our departure in October, it is nice to do some different & even relaxing things on Saturday &

The nine of us have had SO many opportunities to participate with other organizations! Spending time helping the orphanage with supplies to be distributed in the medical clinics and loving the Haitian kids that are so hungry for hugs and affection. Helping a medical clinic see over 100 patients in half a day. Helping the PT clinic to see 30+ patients a day.
Quote of the day: “Um…bugs are just dying on me. I think it’s the Off…”

We had a good day in the PT tent: ) We decorated the tent for Junior’s birthday with balloons that read “Approved,” “Happy Anniversary,” and “Now Leasing!” and a giant paper chain (I thought we’d get more bids on the property: ( ) He was very appreciative and wore the yellow, paper crown with pride. Most of the patients were understanding about their therapy being put on hold for a short period…except for Rene Charles, who asked me if we could just come to his house later. I now have about 20 pictures of Malachie in various karate poses…and the inside of his mouth, his feet, random half-body shots (that is what happens when my camera gets away from me.) As I see it, they are all beautiful pictures! And they are all beautiful people! More to come : )

Another great day in Haiti! Though it’s sweltering in the PT tent the breeze has been helping out a lot. Many of the patients are making great progress and most all of them remain amazingly upbeat. Josh brought prints of pictures he and Betsy had taken and they were a great hit among the patients. The smiles were huge as they recognized each other and pointed out themselves and others that they recognized. Great fun in the PT tent!!

This week we are continuing to send patients to follow-up appointments with the ortho docs in Port-au-Prince to try and make the most of the docs’ stay. Our system is working well as each patient returns with a note from the doctor detailing their new plan of care. Monday was a big day for our patient Richard as he walked with Sarah, PT, and no assistive device for the first time in a long time! We are all happy and healthy

The HOLIA team took a hike today with the fearless leader Rebecca! We hiked up a dry riverbed to a small village and distributed headlamps, t-shirts and shoes. The riverbed hike was challenging due to the lack of shade. The most impressive part was the ease and speed that the locals move up and down the riverbed (as we trudged along)! The team had a great time! It was a great day off!

This photo was taken last weekend on our way from Fond Parisien to Jacmel (a beach). It is an example of the destruction that is still evident in Haiti 7 months after the earthquake. Even though we enjoyed our weekend at the beach, there were constant reminders of the devestation surrounding us. The beach area we traveled to (Jacmel) was also significantly damaged by the earthquake. Tent cities were scattered around and many of buildings were destroyed. There is so much crumbled building…I wish we could grind it all up and use it to rebuild. We did find a hotel and a lovely beach area to enjoy. Haiti is a beautiful country!

HOLIA volunteer Dustin & Sherry from Love A Child report on recent weather handling, a community event and the excitement of near completion of the first phase of 50 Miracle Village houses which will be provided to people with amputations. The families will paint, or help paint, their own houses. Land is already begun to be cleared for Phase Two.

“Nelio, our Haitian director, just told me the Haitian Government will donate a large piece of land to us! It is between us and Ganthier. We can build a huge Haitian market…it will provide jobs for thousands of earthquake victims. There is enough land to build more houses! So much good news, I can hardly stand it!

Diana, PT, and Frank from CA have arrived safely! Diana will be working at the PT clinic, and Frank will be performing several non-medical duties, such as building the new Miracle Village homes and working at the Love A Child distribution center warehouse (assisting orphanages, schools & clinics all over Haiti).
Mallory, returning PT student, and Marissa, PT student, both from the big state of Texas are arriving at this moment. Third-time volunteer Dustin’s plane was delayed, so he will be arriving tomorrow early AM.

I’m heading back to Haiti! For anyone that I haven’t told personally yet, I’ve decided to postpone the education a bit & return to the rewarding experience of a lifetime assisting those in need in Fond Parisien.
I’ll be back starting Aug 28 until the end date in Oct. I cordially invite any & all who are interested to get in touch about joining us!
